As I read the various hurricane Katrina blogs for the latest news and information I was struck by how essential cable news broadcasts are in emergencies like this. While the hurricane bloggers reported valuable information and updates, often found nowhere else and reflecting first person experiences, the cable news networks have the ability to send people out into the area and satellite feed the live video back. Another big disadvantage that bloggers have is that they are not completely self-sufficient like a satellite truck is and when power goes down, as it did in New Orleans with 100% power failure, the bloggers are offline. In an ideal world we would be able to integrate newswire, local newspaper, bloggers, and cable news feeds, possibly using tags to tie it all together.
