Two approaches to VoIP – Skype vs. Vonage : TomsNetworking :

Skype vs. Vonage review. We use both at the house, I can't tell the difference... at some point competing technologies/products become close enough to where you stop thinking about them.

I don't know if this is a comment for Vonage or not (based on differing QoS people have encountered with Skype). I take it that you are good with Vonage as you still have it in your house. I just picked up Vonage today and am anxious to see if it will work as an additional home office line for me. I am also curious as to how easy it will be to set up. Though not elaborate, I'd hate to break my existing home networking setup.

I should have been clearer in my original post. We have both and like each equally well... we would never go back to a traditional landline approach again.

Vonage's voicemail is great, sends the message to your email as a .wav file.

Egads Jeff. The QoS I get with Skype is not too good. When it's working, it's fine, but the sound quality can be bad a times, and I often encounter interrupts. I guess one's mileage can vary. We'll see how it goes with Vonage ...

are you on a DSL or cable broadband? I have cable and get a solid 4mbs on the downlink, which is perhaps why I get good performance.

I primarily use Vonage and am really happy with it. It's really not possible to tell the diff between traditional POTS and VoIP in my home office (except when my 14 month old turns off the power strip that feeds the router and the dialtone goes dark!).

Your different config for Skype may be key. Perhaps it's my computer too. I'm on DSL. I also find I get a lot of service disconnects from the people I talk with in Europe.

I'll be looking forward to Vonage if the equipment ever gets here!
