Consider SF as an example:
- you need a Humvee (the military kind) to survive the pothole heavy streets... actually, the potholes are the street with sporadic patches of asphalt
- you may or may not be able to send your kids to the local neighborhood school, which means you have to plan on expensive private schools for preschool through high school
- SF solves fewer crimes and successfully prosecutes fewer defendants than any city in California. The SF District Attorneys office convicts 34% of the cases they bring, the AVERAGE for the state as a whole is 82%.
- when you walk anywhere in the city you have to run a guantlett of homeless people and general crazies
- gas, food, eating out, everything is more expensive
- the Board of Supervisors, need I say more?
- more cars than parking spots
- want to buy a home in SF, better hope nobody is renting the property you are buying as they have more rights as a tenant than you have as an owner.

But it’s also about quality of life. Despite the fact that nearly half the legislature hails from Los Angeles and the Bay Area, and has been for as long as anyone can remember, and despite being home to some of the richest people and most valuable and beautiful property in America, they have managed to turn their urban cores into nightmares. Their schools are among the worst with no prospect of improving, crime continues to be a real concern, and government services are spotty at best. They may not have to drive as far to get somewhere, but the drive will be miserable from beginning to end any time of day.
